Statement of Purpose
Grounded in the faith of our mothers and foremothers, alive with
the breath of the Spirit, the woman of Notre Dame recognizes her
gifts; she uses these gifts to improve herself and offers them for
the enrichment and edification of the global community. The
woman of Notre Dame measures success not in monetary wealth
but in growth and accomplishment. She has the courage to stand
independently and the strength to support her sisters.

The Women of Notre Dame is rooted in the charism of
Mother
Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger,
the foundress of The Congregation
of the Poor School Sisters of Our Lady (SSND), and is inspired by
the many visionaries, lay and religious, who brought the ideal of
educating women to America; visionaries who believed that
education was the right of all women, not just those of privilege.
The Women of Notre Dame recognizes that the art of learning is
an act of life; that anyone wishing to live vibrantly in and
contribute to the global community must be actively engaged in
the art of inquiry and reason; that wisdom and knowledge cannot
be attained in isolation.

The women of Notre Dame are of many faces, talents, cultures and
nationalities; they are builders, growers, learners, servers,
nurturers, scholars and educators. They search, challenge, heal,
empower and celebrate. They understand that wisdom and
knowledge, some of the most enduring of gifts, are the strongest
deterrents to tragedy, the most powerful weapons for doing good
and the greatest life-giving forces that we can offer to humanity,
to each other and to the generations to come.
